ROBOTIC-TARGETED TRANSPERINEAL BIOPSIES

iSR’obot Mona Lisa is a state-of-the-art, robot-assisted transperineal prostate biopsy system designed for the diagnosis of prostate cancer.By fusing MRI with real-time ultrasound to generate 3D visualizations, the system enables robotic guidance to precisely target suspicious lesions during prostate biopsy, thereby improving prostate cancer detection rates. The device was approved by the U.S. FDA in 2013 and received approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of Korea in August 2025, making it one of the latest advanced medical technologies available.

(1) MRI Scan: Prior to this visit, you will have had an MRI scan, and your specialist will import these image into the software.
(2) Precise Biopsy Planning: During the visit, an ultrasound probe is inserted into the rectum to obtain ultrasound images of the prostate. These images are then combined with the existing MRI images so your specialists can clearly see critical areas and plan for the exact spots where the tissue samples will be taken.
(3) Robotic Targeted Biopsy: Your specialist will then insert a biopsy needle into the prostate gland, using the robotic needle guide to ensure precise placement to remove a small tissue sample from the planned locations.

  • MRI scan: You’ll undergo an MRI scan ahead of the procedure so these images can be used for the biopsy planning.
  • Medication adjustments: Talk to your doctor about the medications you are taking; you may be advised to stop certain medications including blood thinners and antiplatelets a few days before the biopsy.

The procedure itself usually takes around 30-40 minutes, which includes time for modeling the MRI and Ultrasound images and planning the biopsy.

Drink plenty of fluids in the days following your procedure to help flush out your bladder, prevent infection, and reduce the amount of blood in your urine. Slight soreness or discomfort after the procedure is normal, as is some blood in your urine and rust-colored semen for a few weeks. Call your healthcare provider right away if you experience any signs of infection, including fever, heavy bleeding out of your rectum, inability to urinate, bright red or large blood cloths in your urine, shaking, or dizziness.
